On what can a buck do to a man

I’m inclined towards being free, y’know. And I like having the best of both worlds, but if the best of both is not in my immediate proximity, I sometimes fix on it even if I shouldn’t: either change a thing, or create another.
The problem at hand: I bought a new phone and after fiddling with the camera, I came to the conclusion that under some circumstances my photos can be stored as .HEIC files with >=1MB space reduction and the same quality as a JPEG, neat! All fine and good until I wanted to back up some photos to my Windows laptop, and, wouldn’t you know it, I have to pay one friggin buck to view .heic files in the Windows’ Photo Viewer?! Not today, M$, not never.
That being said, I’m on a path to create my own image viewer that can display those petty .heic files, with hopefully other features.
